Historic details of the establishment of JDSF
On 1/4/1977(Showa 52),Japan University DanceSport Federation(Japan Intercollegiate Ballroom Dance Association, then),The Amateur League of Japan Dancesport Federation (The League of Amateur Competition Dancers, then) and Nihon Shakaijin Dance Renmei/NSDR(Tokyo & Kanagawa, then) joined together and established the Japan Amateur Dancers Association (the former organization of JDSF).
Those 3 amateur organizations started to work together to promote dance's sound and athletic charactor. On 7/2/1999(Heisei 11),they reformed JADA and made a new start as JDSF aiming at the development of DanceSport -as a world & Japan's national sport- in Japan.
Japan University DanceSport Federation
In 1948(Showa 23) Kanto 8 universities' chief conference was held by Tokyo University,Waseda University,Keio University,Meiji University,Hosei University, Rikkyo University,Kogakuin University and Nihon University.
In the following year of 1949,they established Japan University DanceSport Federation. It held the 1st All-Japan University Ballroom Dance Championships in 1956(Showa 31).
The JUDF really has a long history.
As a part of university club activities, JUDF is organized by university students independently. Each couple participate in competitions as a group member, not as an individual competitor, representing their university. Most of university clubs belong to the athletic clubs.
The Amateur League of Japan DanceSport Federation (A-League)
It was originally The League of Amateur Dancers, a group of amateur dancers who participated in competitions held by Japan Professional Competition Dancers' Federation.
However, amateur dancers took "dance" as an athletic sport while professional dancers did not.
Under the slogan of "Competition for amteur, organized by amateur", the Amateur group had the 1st All-Amateur 10dance Championship individually in 1978(Showa 53).
The Championship is now the Prince-Mikasa Cup.
In 1980(Showa 55), the amateur league became independent from Japan Professional Competition Dancers' Federation and established the League of Amateur Competition Dancers in Japan(LACD). Soon LACD joined IDSF as a representative of Japan and associated with many amateur groups all over the world. LACD also sent couples and officials to IDSF World Championships.
In Feb 1999,LACD become an internal organization of JDSF, along with the establishment of JDSF.
Nihon Shakaijin Dance Renmei
The number of dance circles were increasing in many areas spontaneously, apart from main dancing spots - dance halls and dance schools. Nihon Shakaijin Dance Renmei was established by unifying these dance circles, mainly in Tokyo and Kanagawa district.
In 1977(Showa 52), Tokyo City Association was established. After that, in 1985(Showa 60), Kanto Shakaijin Dance Renmei was established by unifying dance circles in Kanto district. In 1986(Showa 61), the 1st national organization, NSDR was established. (Kanto district is wide Tokyo metropolitan area.)
NSDR appealed some good effects of dance on social edudation, both in local society and business groups. It introduced dance to the Board of Education, concentrated on improvement in skills and made every effort to expand circles.
NSDR also improved teaching system, instructed managing methods and supported circles. All of those activities were aimed to spread "healthy dance" through local circles.
Those were taken place at Kominkan,Citizen halls and Culture centre.
Moreover,NSDR held competitions of various levels and ages for circle members, to remove prejudice against dance. In 1997(Heisei 8),NSDR self-dissolved because of the early establishment of JDSF.
